Lemon leads Mad Ants’ rally, Fort Wayne falls in season opener

LONG ISLAND — The Long Island Nets (1-0), the NBA G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, opened the 2017-18 season on Saturday night at the team’s new permanent home on Long Island, NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, with a 115-99 victory over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (0-1). The Nets never trailed in the first of three meetings between the clubs this season.

Brooklyn Nets guard Isaiah Whitehead, currently on assignment with Long Island, registered a team-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. Forward Kamari Murphy posted a double-double in the win with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Long Island took an 18-point lead over Fort Wayne after the first quarter before leading 59-37 at the half. Point guard Milton Doyle paced the Nets in the first half with 16 points, shooting 40 percent (6 of 15) from the field, and finished with 20 points.

Leading the way for the Mad Ants at the half was guard Walter Lemon Jr. with 15 points. He notched 15 more points in the third quarter alone to put the visitors within two, 76-74, at the end of the period. Lemon Jr. ended the night with a game-high 34 points and six assists.

The home team was led by an eight-point fourth quarter from Whitehead and an 11-point final frame from guard Shannon Scott off the bench before clinching the 16-point victory.

The Nets will travel to the Raptors 905 for their first road game of the season on Wednesday, November 8. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Fort Wayne will play their home opener against the Greensboro Swarm on Tuesday, November 7, at 7 p.m. ET.
